Traffic and Infrastructure
Oahu is pushing for more cruise ships and the ferry, yet their interest doesn't extend to helping Maui with the infrastructure needed to deal with them.
Lahaina Harbor is hemmed in by historic buildings, protected by Federal law. They have trouble just finding a place to build a bathroom for all the cruise ship customers, let alone juggling space to load them on and off their ship while our residents who use Expeditions and Island Marine to commute to Lanai and Molokai are trying to get home from work.
Kahului has fewer Federally protected buildings so the State is able to push aside our resident's canoe clubs, surfing, fishing and beaches to cater to the cruise ships and ferry.
Maui County will have to bear the cost of widening the roads to accomodate the 1,000 additional cars using Pu'unene per day when the ferry gets going. But since Kahului is almost completely built up in the Pu'unene area, there really isn't any way to widen the roads.
So the residents will pay the price in ever-longer commute times.
