Hear What the Opposition Has to Say
(Sadly, few understand the concept of paragraphs)
Sky Lewis
A "Sky Lewis" built on Maliko Point, agreeing not to build on top of the Hawaiian graves and then constructed wedding tents with hard floors for dancing on the graves. A "Sky Lewis" was also brought to trial for Abuse of a Family or Household Member
Here is Sky Lewis' email to us dated 2/15/05
"You and your group are just as pathetic as any other group that is SO antidevelopment that you will try to stop development no matter how logical it is. Are you funded by the airlines? Do you want to keep getting ripped off by the airlines? With the ferry we can drive our cars onboard with our families and pets with out all of the hassles and high cost of flying. The canoe club beef doesn’t hold water either. If they were real canoe paddlers they wouldn’t need the safety of the harbor anyway…………. Did the original canoe paddlers have a harbor – NO! So why do they think that they are retaining the culture – DUH! Get this – you can’t stop progress. Period. When something comes along that offers an obvious benefit to our people, put your own small minded selfish views under a rock where they belong. I have been here on Maui for over 23 years and am tired of seeing groups like yours stand in the way of benefits for all of us."
More excerpts from Sky's email...still formatted in one looong paragraph:
"If you call a two bedroom three bath house big you are dillusional and
silly. It is about 3700 sq. ft. and that is not big to me or lots of other
people. I have learned a lot about how small minded people on this island
are SO jealous and ignorant. I also know that many people here come here
because they couldn't make it somewhere else or are just losers"..."I
have learned for example to give the Hawaiian activist the same respect that
they give me - none. "
Evan Foster
Apparently a wedding photographer (maybe for the same wedding that Sky got in so much trouble for?) and also a real estate salesman at Coldwell Banker on Maui.
Evan writes:
"Why can't anyone come to a Happy medium on this Island. Everything is fight, fight, fight and nothing ever gets accomplished. When it finally does it's too late and the damage has already been done.
You can't stop the fact that dozens of people are moving to Maui every day and need to be provided with housing, transportation, and sustainable living conditions.
When everyone decides to understand that alternate forms of transportation other than airlines are vital to help people who otherwise couldn't afford to visit friends and relatives on neighboring islands.
You need to come up with an agreement that will be beneficial to both entities involved. The world isn't going to stop revolving because you don't want to move your practice and or launch location for your boats. People and populations of our growing planet need to be accommodated for and planned. You can't keep telling people to go home. That will just want to make them stay longer. Stop trying to defeat progress. You're wasting everyones time and doing more damage to Mauis' already pathetic infrastructure. Start using some common sense and stop being so selfish.
Grasping for Aloha, Evan Foster
Our response:
"Do you feel that you understand the Hawaiian culture and value it? Have you discussed this with Hawaiians? Or are you looking at the situation from a Mainland perspective...trying to impose mainland values and priorities on a society that is culturally very different?
As far as transportation - one reason an EIS for the Superferry is necessary is to get through to Oahu DOT that we already have gridlock at Puunene and Ka'ahumanu. We need DOT to come up with funds and roads to accomodate the influx of Superferry cars going on and off. Or we need to relocate the docking.
Actually the problem with Maui is that people build without thinking through the infrastructure -- then we are left with insoluable problems.
The purpose of an EIS is to solve problems up front -- discussion and public input makes a better plan.
I personally do not oppose the Superferry -- however, I believe that if it is a viable business, that we do not do it justice to rush without proper planning. That will make it more likely to fail - just as the previous ferry failed.
If the plan is so shaky and the finances so tenuous that proper planning will cause the whole scheme to collapse, then isn't it better to know that BEFORE we invest $40 million of Hawai'i state taxpayers' money?"
Evan's reply:
"Get a Grip and Re-Focus your Anger in someone else's direction. Who is Hawaiian anymore? I've never lived in a more Prejudice place in my life. I guess there are just too many Cultures in one spot here ( The majority of which seem to be highly uneducated and ignorant about other human values, cultures, and origins ) I'd wish you the best but don't feel you'd be worthy of anything but your own kind.......Have a Happy Life and try not to stay angry for too long as it will get the best of you if it hasn't already. Have a Good One Dear................"
Our Response
Interesting viewpoint for some one who is a guest in this land. I'm surprised you think I am angry. Perhaps it is yourself you are speaking of?
Did you even read and understand my email?
Evan's Reply
Maybe you're just a guest on this Planet and haven't come down to reality yet. You know nothing about me and continue to make Hasty, Ignorant generalizations about my being. That is the Typical, Prejudice Ignorance that is Destroying you. Get Help Quick and stop trying to Justify your Ill Fate.
At this point, it became clear that Evan was not interested in a real dialog so we didn't reply.
Evan tries again...
"Haven't heard your comeback yet a was wondering if you were OK.
Have you taken your reality pill yet ? "
